Among the various companies driving the developmen

Among the various companies driving the development of European space exploration is Spain’s Pld space. It came into the spotlight with the test launch of the Miura 1 suborbital rocket last October, but continues to attract media attention.

It recently obtained €120 million in funding to expand its infrastructure and production capacity in order to launch the Miura-5 rocket by 2025.

It is also taking giant steps forward for its own future, with the inauguration of Europe’s first space rocket factory and the construction of a new launch base at Europe’s Kourou spaceport.

Start-ups of this kind are therefore an important signal, highlighting a Europe that is attentive to technological development and the space economy and is not afraid to enter a market where there are already US and Chinese giants with established leadership.

Fashion often lacks the profound impact of awe or fear, except for rare occasions like when stylists eagerly share images from the James Webb Space Telescope on Instagram. Just as 19th-century landscape paintings aimed to evoke a sense of the sublime too do modern astronomical images captivate the human imagination.

In the realm of fashion, the allure of space exploration has long been a source of inspiration. Designers like Pierre Cardin, André Courrèges, Paco Rabanne, and Thierry Mugler found themselves drawn to the futuristic possibilities of space, translating its wonder into their creations. From Cardin’s iconic silver vinyl creations to Courrèges’ avant-garde Moon Girl collection, these designers pushed the boundaries of fashion, infusing their garments with elements reminiscent of the cosmos.

Now, in a historic collaboration, Italian high fashion is poised to make its mark on the moon. Axiom Space and Prada have signed an agreement to contribute to the development of the new spacesuits destined for NASA’s Artemis III lunar mission in 2025. This mission, which marks the first crewed landing on the Moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972 and includes the first woman to set foot on the lunar surface, represents a groundbreaking step in space exploration.

Prada’s role in the project is crucial, focusing mainly on the design and development of the outer layer of the spacesuits. The AxEMU suit, designed by Axiom, aims to optimize the conditions for astronauts during space exploration missions, while also providing NASA with commercially developed systems necessary for accessing, living, and working on and near the Moon. This collaboration between fashion and space exploration not only highlights the intersection of technology and design but also underscores the enduring human fascination with the cosmos and the boundless possibilities it holds.

A total solar eclipse enchanted all North American

A total solar eclipse enchanted all North American viewers last 8 April.

For several minutes, the moon totally obscured the solar disk and painted the sky in different colours that faded into darkness.

Many professional astronomers gathered en route to witness this event.

As the moon eclipsed the sun, the temperature dropped and a twilight settled over the landscape. The sun became a ring of white light surrounding the lunar silhouette for a few minutes, which is possible during a total eclipse.

The impact the eclipse had on social media is important here, as platforms such as Twitter and Instagram were filled with images and videos, and there was great enthusiasm in every corner of the planet. It is indeed very important to analyse the media impact of these events, which often manage to involve and bring together a large number of people, passionate and not, and succeed in bringing scientific topics in front of the broad masses.

Mitsubishi Corp. has joined Starlab Space, a joint

Mitsubishi Corp. has joined Starlab Space, a joint venture between Voyager Space and Airbus Defence and Space focused on developing a commercial space station, as a strategic partner.

Mitsubishi’s Infrastructure, Ship & Aerospace Division COO expressed excitement about the partnership and its potential for driving innovation in space exploration.

The company aims to enhance Starlab’s value by leveraging space research to support product development in various industries and providing Japanese industry access to Starlab’s capabilities.

Airbus Defense and Space’s CEO Mike Schoellhorn highlighted Mitsubishi’s strong history in the space industry and its alignment with Starlab’s goals.

This partnership could also help Starlab secure funding from the Japanese government.

Starlab’s creation was a collaboration between Voyager and Airbus to gain better access to European markets and explore post-ISS opportunities with the European Space Agency.

This move could enable ESA to continue accessing low Earth orbit using commercial vehicles developed in Europe.

Overall, Mitsubishi’s involvement in Starlab enhances the venture’s capabilities and market reach, positioning it as a key player in the future of space exploration and commercialization.

Elon Musk has launched 22 new Starlink satellites

Elon Musk has launched 22 new Starlink satellites that will add to a constellation that already has more than 6,000 satellites. In doing so, he is expanding his network that aims to provide access to a high-speed Internet connection that will reach several uncovered, rural and remote areas.

The launch, after being postponed several times, took off last Monday evening at 7.30pm at the Vandenberg space base in California, leaving a spectacular trail of satellites in the sky.

Elon Musk has, however, encountered many obstacles in Italy, where he has come up against opposition from local telecommunications companies who have decided not to share the data in order to avoid signal interference and, for this reason, discussions are underway with the authorities to find a solution.

Geomagnetic storms are intense disturbances of Earth’s magnetosphere caused by the efficient transfer of energy from solar wind to Earth’s surrounding space.

These storms alter Earth’s magnetosphere, affecting currents, plasmas, and magnetic fields. High-velocity solar wind and a magnetic field directed towards the south are necessary conditions for geomagnetic storms.

On March 23, the Sun emitted a powerful brisk, causing two class X solar bursts, raising concerns about Earth-related impacts. The arrival of the Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) has caused a loss of auroral activity during the day and a shift of the interplanetary magnetic field towards the north, affecting aurora boreal activity.

Terrible consequences were expected such as the solar storm of 1859, known as the Carrington event, the most intense geomagnetic storm ever recorded, but fortunately none of this happened, leaving mankind in suspense before the fate of Space.

During the last Knowledge Sharing event, there was an interesting insight into start-ups in the space sector. Innovation in the space sector is indeed driven by the emergence of new companies that continue to expand the market and create added value. Different startup were analyzed:

🚁Volocopter is a German company, a pioneer in the field of vertical take-off and landing aircraft, which aims to revolutionise urban mobility. It will seek to launch an air taxi service during the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

🛸Impluse Space, founded by a former SpaceX member, focuses on delivering cargo to various orbits using vehicles such as Mira and Helios, aiming to drive the lunar economy.

🛸Relativity Space, a Californian startup seeking to revolutionise rocket production by proposing 3D printing with the aim of launching cheap satellites.

🛰️SpinLaunch, which also seeks to revolutionise launch systems by using kinetic energy, cutting costs and drastically renovating the market.

There is an ambitious project proposed by the American company SpaceVIP, which aims to offer a unique service: a dinner in space for six people at a cost of $500,000 per person.

Departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, a spacecraft will reach an altitude of 30 kilometres for a journey of about six hours. It consists of a pressurised capsule that is lifted by a space balloon and is equipped with Wi-Fi.

The highlight of this trip is the dinner, proposed by the two-Michelin-starred chef Rasmus Munk, who will inspire his menu with space exploration. The proceeds will be donated to the Space Prize foundation to support gender equality in scientific and technological development.

However, the impact that this project will have on the development of the space industry remains an unknown. For some, it may be an opportunity to make spaceflight cheaper, but it is uncertain to what extent such an initiative will attract a sufficiently profitable and economically sustainable market.

Californian start-up Elve has succeeded in obtaini

Californian start-up Elve has succeeded in obtaining $15 million in funding to develop an innovative millimetre-wave amplification technology.

The technology is based on travelling wave tubes (TWTs) and is able to offer an efficient and stable service with very small dimensions. These TWTs offer high bandwidth and low latency and are therefore ideal for a high-speed communication application.

This has attracted investment from several venture capital funds as it is thought that these amplifiers can improve the speed and accessibility of communication, having a big impact in the space but also on ground applications over long distances. The CEO, Diana Gmazina, emphasised the importance of reducing the cost of amplifiers by about a factor of ten in order to revolutionise wireless communication.

It is interesting to note the attention of venture capital funds on this type of market, as it represents a very important segment of the space economy that will have great developments in the future.

The European crew of the US company Axiom Space’

The European crew of the US company Axiom Space’s Ax-3 mission, headed by Italian astronaut Walter Villadei, will launch from Cape Canaveral towards the International Space Station.

Together with the ASI, Villadei will carry out scientific microgravity research during the trip, which is funded by the Italian Defense.

An EMSi suit for intravehicular activities in space will be provided by Apulian company REA Space in support of the expedition.

With the use of muscle stimuli, the bionic suit mimics Earth’s gravity while keeping track of the astronaut’s muscular activity and promoting proper bodily fluid distribution.

The suit is made by nylon, graphene and carbon fibre and an integrated electronic system capable of monitoring and, possibly, intervening on the human body to counteract muscle atrophy. The garment is comfortable and has antibacterial qualities because of the graphene and carbon fiber fabric. REA Space is financed by the Puglia Region and is housed in Turin, Puglia. It took part in the Takeoff acceleration initiative run by CDP.

The company advances its entrepreneurial mission of recreating gravity by bringing its Made in Italy technology into space with Ax-3.

Recently, actress Bridgit Mendler, known for her roles in Disney products such as ‘Good Luck Charlie’ and ‘Wizards of Wavery’, became CEO of Northwood space, a start-up that aims to revolutionise access to satellite data by mass producing earth stations.

The start-up proposed a bottleneck in the current system, as it currently costs a lot of money and takes a long time to build customised stations. Therefore, data highway access is offered to the various satellite operators with modular stations that can be implemented quickly.

The company has received USD 6.3 million in funding and has a team with experience in many other space companies, including some very reputable ones. It is also planning to test the first connection with a spacecraft that should be in orbit by the end of the year.

What stands out, however, is the interesting background of Bridgit Mendler who, after a brilliant career as an actress, graduated from MIT and Harvard, obtaining a PhD and a law degree, demonstrating a multifaceted and brilliant personality.
